Work/Life Support
As a division of Human Resources, UA Life & Work Connections consults regularly with individuals and departments about community child care options, determining the appropriateness of various programs or settings and the availability of supportive materials and referrals. In particular, employee and student parents often express great interest in learning more about summer care strategies.
As such, Program Coordinator Caryn Jung encourages families to consider the following tips and guidelines when considering and selecting summer programs for child(ren):
- Assess program offerings and accreditation status.
Whether a day or resident camp setting or a specialized summer component within an existing child care program, a variety of enriching activities is ideal for keeping children's interest and motivation levels high. Look for accreditation designations by the American Camp Association (www.acacamps.org) or the National Association for the Education of Young Children (www.naeyc.org).
- Look for a balance between active and quiet times throughout the daily schedule.
Summer scheduling often includes a strong emphasis on outdoor activity, field trips and water play. As with the regular school year, children benefit from having both high energy and reflective periods available on a consistent basis each day.
- Emphasize ongoing communication to ensure a successful summer experience.
Such dialogue should include inquires regarding the developmentally-appropriate nature of the curriculum and environment; applicable state regulations; health, safety and emergency protocols; cultural and/or religious sensitivity and awareness; the counselor- or teacher-to-child ratio; staff screening procedures, including background, driving and criminal checks and examples of staff engagement and commitment, such as prior education and training and having relevant, professional certification or licensure.
We hope these suggestions are helpful to you and your family as you plan your summer activities. To request additional information about program services, please call 621-9870. Thank you and have a safe and enjoyable summer!
