Alternative Work Arrangement Models

Common themes for the models listed below are variations in the scheduling, location and design of work that accommodates departmental, family, professional development and commuting issues. Alternative work arrangements can be viewed as a single, independent option or as a combination of options supporting the effective resolution of work/life issues. Individuals and managers will need to determine how a selected arrangement(s) may affect compensation, benefits, vacation, sick and leave time.

Compressed Work Week: alternative scheduling that allows a standard full-time work schedule to occur within a condensed, scheduled period

Example: a 4/10 schedule is comprised of 4-ten hour days a week with one day off to equal 40 hours in one week; some variations may occur due to legal holidays

Flexible Work Schedule: a broad term that encompasses various work arrangements that mutually support organizational productivity and greater individual control over one's time

Example: varied beginning and ending work times for select days of the week (10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.) or applying extended hours worked over a period of time towards a future date to address a personal, child or elder care need

Flexible-Year Program: Upon approval of their department, UA employees may elect to take up to four (4) pay periods off during the year or work an academic, rather than fiscal year schedule

Job Sharing: a full time position that is shared between two individuals with hours evenly or unevenly divided between the parties

Part-Time Work: working fewer hours than the organization's standard full-time schedule

Phased Retirement: a flexible work arrangement that allows retirement-track employees to gradually reduce the number of hours worked over a period of one to two years

Rehire of Retiree Policy: Under certain circumstances, UA employees may elect to return to work part-time following retirement

Telework/Telecommuting: a work arrangement that allows individuals to work at home or at another designated site for all or some portion of their scheduled employment hours
