You and Your Health, series of six classes and an additional introduction class. A series of 6 classes developed by Life & Work Connections designed to give you the tools you need to follow a healthier lifestyle. Each one hour session is packed with practical, easy to follow information to help you develop individual attainable goals and set you on a course for positive lifestyle changes.
Current Research: Nutrition and Cancer Prevention.
Heart Healthy Eating. Saturated fat, trans fatty acids, omega 3 fatty acids, soluble fiber - how do these components in the foods we eat translate into heart health or disease? This presentation is designed to help take the mystery out of choosing a heart healthy diet. Recipes and other practical suggestions for improving your heart health will be provided.
Dietary Suggestions for Lowering Your Blood Pressure. High blood pressure is often called "the silent killer", since often you never feel like you have it. However uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, heart attacks, stroke, and kidney failure. Learn about the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's DASH diet (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension), and other suggestions to keep your blood pressure in a normal range.
Effective Weight Management: Overcoming the Barriers. What is a healthy weight for you? How can you maintain a healthy weight when time and energy are in short supply? We will explore some of the concepts of achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight.
What are Type II Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, and How Can I Prevent them? With the increased number of obese and overweight people in the United States, there has been a rise in the number of people diagnosed with both the Metabolic Syndrome (or Syndrome X) and Diabetes. We will review their definitions and some of the ways to prevent them.
Osteoporosis Prevention: Maintaining Bone Health. Osteoporosis is a disease of weak porous bones that can be easily broken, causing pain and loss of independence. This presentation will provide information on its prevention, discussing the areas of diet and physical activity.
Understanding the New Food Guide Pyramid. There are some exciting new concepts brought forth in the new MyPyramid website. Come and hear what the Department of Health and Human Services and the USDA have developed for our optimal nutrition practices.
Preconception and Pregnancy: Important Considerations for Mothers and Fathers. If you are thinking about getting pregnant, or already are, this presentation will give you practical information on nutrition and fitness considerations.

The "UA Walking for Health Pathways" is featured, with its up to date information and campus maps for the north, central and south campus, which include mileage and descriptions of the pathways in a printable format.
Breastfeeding Basics and Infant Feeding Through the First year of Life. Why is breastfeeding so highly recommended? When should solid foods be started? Come and learn the basics of infant nutrition.
Establishing Good Nutrition Practices for Children and Teens. Childhood obesity is on the rise, and with it the risks of chronic diseases. Find out how to establish healthy eating and exercise patterns, and what the nutritional needs are for children and teens.
