Additional Opportunities
There are many other opportunities on campus for students, faculty and staff to improve their health. Below are listed some of these options:
Campus Recreation Membership - For Everyone
Campus Recreation offers numerous programs and activities for faculty, staff
and students. Offerings include group fitness classes such as Pilates, Tai Chi,
Spinning, various styles of Yoga, muscle pump and Cardio Kickbox. Our activity
class schedule includes Tango, Salsa, Capoeira, Ballroom Dance and Belly Dancing.
Learn how to golf from a resident pro, take swimming lessons, or sign up for a
class in another sport. You can learn to scuba dive and kayak through our
Outdoor Adventures program. An all-time favorite of faculty and staff is the
Group Personal Training class - great for novices or beginners who want to
improve their techniques and maximize their workout. If you would like one-on-one
assistance, the department has an outstanding personal training program
staffed by certified trainers who can develop a program tailored to your
specific health and wellness goals. Krav Maga and Aikido are among some of the
other martial arts classes offered. Last but not least is the selection of
health/safety and aquatics classes. Get certified in cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, automated external defibrillators, first aid and lifeguarding.
Sign up for classes at the business office, located on the second floor of
the Student Recreation Center. For more information, call (520) 621-8715 or

UA Life & Work Connections-For Faculty, Staff, and Appointed Personnel
As a benefits-eligible employee at the U of A, there are many free services available to you from the 5 components of UA Life & Work Connections (Child Care and Family Resources, Elder Care and Life Cycle Resources, Work/Life Support, Employee Assistance Counseling/ Consultation, and Worksite Wellness). Here is a sampling that relates to your health.
The Worksite Wellness Program offers several services to help you reduce your health risk for heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases:
Heart-Health Screenings
This free heart-health screening can be scheduled and held in your department (for 12 or more participants), or you can sign up for one of the monthly open screenings held at UA Life & Work Connections' offices (1125 N. Vine St.) Please call 621-2493 to register, and check the The WellBeing newsletter or Worksite Wellness' website for current dates http://lifework.arizona.edu/wsw/screenings/well_scr.php.
This screening includes:
- Blood pressure
- Total cholesterol, HDL (high density lipoprotein "good cholesterol"), and their ratio
- Hemoglobin A1C (measures long-term serum glucose, a diabetes screening tool. Optional, only at open screenings for a $10 fee)
- Body composition (body mass index and % body fat)
- 3-minute perceived exertion step test
- Test results, nutrition and physical activity professional consultation
- Sleep and stress professional consultation
The consultations at the end of the screening are one-on-one and confidential. More in-depth individual consultation appointments can be scheduled. Follow-up testing at 6 months is provided to those identified at high risk for heart disease or diabetes.

Osteoporosis Screening
Osteoporosis means "porous bone" and is characterized by a decrease in your bone's density, which increases your risk for fractures. We use a Lunar Achilles Ultrasonometer to measure the bone density of your heel. The heel is used because its bone is similar to that found in the spine and hip, where most osteoporotic fractures occur. Nutrition/fitness professionals will interpret the results of the test for you, and provide information on bone health and osteoporosis prevention strategies. Screenings are usually held once a year. Call 621-2493.
Employee Assistance, Counseling, and Consultation
Employee Assistance works closely with Worksite Wellness because stress and emotions have impact on health. We seek to foster growth, resiliency and effectiveness in the individual and in the work place by providing services to help the "whole person." Services are free to benefits eligible faculty and staff. Consultation and counseling are voluntary, free and confidential (within legal limits). http://lifework.arizona.edu/ea/.
Presentations
A variety of classes are available to bring current nutrition, fitness, and life skills topics to you. They can be offered as a lunch-time series, such as Healthy Habits for Life, a 6-8 week series dealing with body image, nutrition, and fitness issues. Or individual lectures can be arranged for one time presentations, such as Getting Back to Good Nutrition and Fitness after the Holidays. Topics can be tailored to meet the needs of your department. Call 621-2493.
Residence Hall Association (RHA)
Composed of two representatives from each residence hall, RHA acts as a coordinating voice for all the halls on the UA campus. Since walking and other forms of physical activity are vital for students, RHA is pleased to help promote and publicize the various walking routes on campus.
