In today's fast-paced work environment, finding time for wellness can often take a backseat. However, Tina Douglas, a Wellness Ambassador in the College of Engineering, is changing that narrative by creating engaging opportunities for staff to connect and recharge. Her role has enabled her to cultivate meaningful relationships with colleagues, prioritizing wellness amidst everyone's busy schedules.
One of the exciting aspects of being a Wellness Ambassador is the chance to introduce innovative activities that encourage participation among staff. This past semester, Tina turned to the national day calendar for inspiration, resulting in a variety of fun events centered around unique holidays. Notably, National Fudge Sundae Day and National Play-Doh Day brought a refreshing break to the rigors of daily work.
National Fudge Sundae Day, celebrated on July 25, was a standout event. Amidst soaring summer temperatures, Tina organized an afternoon sundae-making session that drew a significant turnout. Staff members were delighted with a selection of ice cream flavors, fruits, nuts, and various toppings. For those seeking healthier options, fruit bars were also provided, ensuring everyone could indulge in a sweet treat. The event fostered interaction among staff from multiple engineering programs, reinforcing the sense of community within the college.
While National Play-Doh Day didn’t see the same level of attendance, the creativity displayed by participants was truly inspiring. Staff brought their imaginations to life with their Play-Doh creations, highlighting the event's playful spirit. Even after the activities concluded, several team members popped by Tina’s office to collect their Play-Doh for later use, proving that the joy of creation extended beyond the scheduled event.
Tina’s efforts have increased awareness of the Wellness Ambassador program and encouraged more staff to participate in future events.
“With each activity, attendance is slowly increasing. These opportunities are rewarding, allowing us to connect with coworkers while providing a much-needed break from the day’s stresses,” Tina shared.
Tina’s supervisor, Kelly Potter, expressed gratitude for the impact of the Wellness Ambassador program, stating, “The College of Engineering is happy to have Wellness Ambassadors such as Tina to provide unique and fun opportunities for the faculty and staff throughout the year. We are thankful for this program and look forward to many more opportunities in the upcoming year.”
As the College of Engineering moves forward, its commitment to fostering a culture of wellness through innovative programs will undoubtedly continue to benefit staff, encourage a healthier work-life balance, and strengthen community ties.
