Did you know there is a phenomenon known as ‘Dead Butt’ Syndrome? The official terminology doctors use is a lower cross syndrome, gluteal amnesia, or gluteus medius tendinosis. Yikes! That’s a lot to worry about, or is it? There’s a simple fix. To avoid this issue, move while you work, or take a few minutes to move those muscles . Any physical activity you can get in while you sit can be beneficial in avoiding ‘Dead Butt’ Syndrome.
During Move Arizona, your goal is to reduce your risk of chronic disease by participating in physical activity . Remember that physical activity is cumulative, and all minutes count, so you don’t have to do everything at once. For example, if you do 5-10 minutes of physical activity at your desk every hour, those minutes add up after an 8-hour day. You can start with these six desk exercises or these fifteen simple exercises and add 15-20 minutes of cardio to really get the heart moving. A brisk walk to Starbucks or taking the stairs to your next meeting can meet your cardio minutes. For instance, walking to a meeting and taking the stairs can take 15 minutes. Walking back might take less time because coming down the stairs is sometimes faster than going up!
If the desk exercises don’t inspire you, see if you can find your own to do. What matters is simply moving and increasing your physical activity as you get stronger.
