In recent months, Ann Chihak Poff, the Wellness Ambassador at Tech Launch Arizona (TLA), has spearheaded an initiative dubbed "Wellness Wednesday Tips," aimed at uplifting the morale of her colleagues during challenging times. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many coworkers expressing appreciation and contributing their own wellness ideas.
Ann began with an introductory post announcing her role as the Wellness Ambassador and outlining her vision for the program. The diverse avenues of wellness—physical, mental, emotional, financial, cultural, and social—became central themes in her weekly communications. Encouraging engagement, she invited her colleagues to share topics they were interested in, leading to a collaborative and vibrant exchange of ideas.
Among the various tips shared, one highlighted the significance of signing up for a Pima County Library Card. This initiative not only educated colleagues about the benefits of library access, such as free admission to local cultural institutions through Culture Passes, but it also ignited conversations around community involvement. Several employees shared their experiences of signing up, enhancing the connection among team members.
One of the most humorous tips addressed the phenomenon known as "dead butt syndrome," a condition supposedly caused by prolonged sitting. This light-hearted topic generated lively discussions and seamlessly integrated into Ann's Wednesday yoga class, where participants focused on glute strength. Ann fostered engagement and participation in the class and the broader wellness initiative by relating the wellness tip to an actionable and fun food activity.
Continuing the wellness theme, Ann informed her colleagues of the opportunity to earn paid time off for volunteering, promoting community service as an essential component of well-being. In October 2023, her team spent a day volunteering at a local food bank. This experience provided meaningful support to the community and strengthened the bonds among team members. Encouraged by the positive response, plans are in motion for additional volunteer opportunities, including a potential collaboration with the humane society.
One of the most rewarding outcomes of Ann's efforts has been the conversations sparked by the Wellness Wednesday tips. Colleagues are not just passively receiving information; they actively engage, share insights, and provide additional ideas, creating an ongoing dialogue that enhances office morale. Many of these conversations occur in person, providing a sense of connection during challenging times.
Looking ahead, Ann is excited to introduce a December Wellness Challenge focused on mindful breathing. With the holiday season often bringing stress, she encourages her colleagues to dedicate time to simply breathing and being still, promoting mindfulness in daily routines. This challenge coincided with UA Cares Workplace Giving Campaign announcements and additional holiday festivities.
In addition to her wellness initiatives, Ann has been regularly teaching yoga at TLA since February 2023. Classes consistently attract four to six attendees; feedback highlights the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere she cultivates. Her tailored approach, which incorporates props and variations, ensures that all body types can comfortably participate, making yoga accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
With Halloween just past, Ann also organized a themed costume contest and potluck to celebrate creativity and community spirit amid ongoing challenges. The event showcased fun and imaginative costumes, and the potluck highlighted the team's camaraderie.
As the TLA community gears up for the upcoming Holiday Spirit Week and Treat Week (Dec. 16-20), excitement is in the air. Ann's efforts to integrate a holiday theme into the festivities promise to foster further connection and joy. One of her colleagues has even volunteered to host a cookie swap and a cider and hot cocoa bar, ensuring this celebration will be delightful and memorable.
Paul Tumarkin, Ann’s supervisor, commended her enthusiasm and commitment: “Ann has been amazing, volunteering to share her energy and expertise with our team. It’s really made a difference, giving the office an opportunity for people to come together each week and share some time and space.”
Through her innovative approach and genuine dedication to wellness, Ann Chihak Poff is transforming the culture at Tech Launch Arizona. She proves that even small initiatives can significantly impact team morale and well-being. Her story is a testament to the power of community and connection and the importance of prioritizing wellness in the workplace.
